How to Live More in the Present

Sometimes you just got to go with the flow

The other day I had a long conversation with one of my roommates.

You know, one of those talks where you’re just vibing, talking about literally anything and everything that comes to mind.

Life, consciousness, philosophy, dreams… you name it.

One minute you’re sitting there eating breakfast and the next thing you know, nearly three hours have passed.

But how? It only felt like a few minutes.

Well, if you’ve ever heard of or been in flow state, you know this feeling well.

Flow state is essentially another name for when you’re in “the zone” or completely immersed in something.

And funny enough, we were actually talking about flow state during the flow of the conversation.

Anyway, that’s beyond the point.

The point is, we came to a realization during our long discussion:

The more you focus on something, the less likely it is to come to you. But the less you focus on something, the more likely it is to come to you.

Counterintuitive, isn’t it?

Now before you call me crazy, let’s look at an example.

Let’s say a deadline is fast approaching and you only have a few hours to get a project done. Many people would likely feel desperate in a situation like this.

They would be so focused on getting into the flow state and completing the project that they would face far too much resistance. There would be too much pressure to get into the flow state as opposed to just… letting things flow.

There’s a reason it’s called flow state.

Because it’s the feeling of being completely focused on the present moment. Immersed in the now.

Writing, playing a sport, producing music, designing graphics. It doesn’t matter what it is.

We’ve all experienced it whether we realized it or not.

It’s when things just come naturally. There’s no resistance or expectation of the outcome. No worrying about the past or stressing about the future. It’s just you and the present moment.

And that, my friend, is a beautiful thing.

Because the natural order of life is just to flow through the present moment. The past and future don’t exist outside of your own imagination.

So if you want to get into flow state and experience the way life was meant to be lived, there’s a couple important things to remember:

1. You can’t force anything in life

Thinking you need to do something or focusing only on the outcome will eliminate any possibility of reaching flow state. In fact, it will decrease the chance of that thing coming into your life at all.

Don’t force things. Just let it flow.

2. Approach everything with an abundance mindset

Like stated above, thinking you need to have something will decrease the likelihood of it occurring. Why? Because the universe is like a mirror.

If you try and force things or act out of a scarcity mindset, you’ll attract those things into your life. Thinking in terms of “lack of” will create that scarcity in the world around you.

But on the other hand, if you live with an abundance mindset where everything comes to you in abundance, where you’re deserving of all good in your life, you’re much more likely to see these things in the world around you.

Glass half full or glass half empty? It’s your choice.

Oftentimes to get what you want in life, you just have to let things flow. Don’t force anything, just let it be.

Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, focus on what you do have. Instead of stressing about the future, focus on the present moment and appreciate how far you’ve come.

Because sometimes the answer you’ve been looking for is simply to go with the flow of life, wherever it may take you.

Never stop dreaming,

Connor
